John Kim Bell: A Conductor of Social Enterprise

Through hard work and dedication Mr. Bell has become one of the most successful entrepreneurs and philanthropists in Canada. Hearing his story and advice is worth the price of admission in any venue. After years of training, Mr. Bell became the first Aboriginal to become a conductor when he was appointed to the Toronto Symphony in 1980.
Mr. Bell initiated and built the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation into Canada's largest and most successful Aboriginal charity. He also established the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards on CBC Television and served as Executive Producer for 11 years. This work and the development of corporate financial support for an Aboriginal organization are unprecedented in Canada. He is known as a social entrepreneur. He is attributed with raising unprecedented corporate support for NAAF.
From September 2006 – Present, Bell has served as the President, of Bell & Bernard Limited that specializes in First Nations Relations in resource development, renewable energy and also in areas of television production, corporate development, and project management. Clients include Brookfield Renewable Power, Enbridge Pipelines Inc., Hatch, and Munsee-Delaware First Nation. Bell Currently works as an energy executive at Brookfield Renewable Power. He helped established and currently manages the Enbridge School Plus Program for Enbridge Pipelines Inc.
Bell’s first passion was in music. He started his career as a conductor of Broadway musicals in New York. He became the first symphonic conductor of Aboriginal ancestry upon appointment to the Toronto Symphony in 1980. Mr. Bell is a producer of symphony concert events, ballet, and television.
